Latest trends in the Australian dairy herdAdam Daniel - 11 June 2010
Genetic trends and production statistics for Australia’s national dairy herd have just been released in the latest Australian Dairy Herd Improvement Report, published jointly by the Australian Dairy Herd Improvement Scheme (ADHIS) and the National Herd Improvement Association of Australia (NHIA). For example, over the past 10 years: Milk fat production (in kg per cow) has increased by 40 kg (17%) Milk protein production (in kg per cow) has increased by 36kg (19%) The average herd size has increased by 39%. These trends relate only to herds and cows enrolled in official herd recording programs, but they do reflect significant changes in a relatively short space of time, "One third of gains in production can be attributed to genetic improvement over the past 20 years, using better bulls doesn’t have to take more time or money but the results impact on the herd year after year,” said Mr Wes Judd, ADHIS Chairman. You can view the Australian Dairy Herd Improvement Report under the News or Data base section of the web-site
